Seven unwritten rules of campsite etiquette
Be a good neighbour in a field full of strangers: a light-hearted guide to camp manners.
Nobody hands out a rulebook at the gate, but everyone notices when it is broken. Here are seven habits of campers people are happy to park next to.
- Arrive in daylight if you can; reversing a caravan in the dark entertains no one.
- Quiet hours start at 10 pm. Whispers carry further than you think.
- Do not cut through other people’s pitches; the path is there for a reason.
- Point your headlights and lanterns down, not into your neighbour’s tent.
- Keep dogs on a lead and clean up after them.
- Offer to lend a mallet. Camping friendships start with a borrowed mallet.
- Wave. Always wave.
Follow these and you will be invited to share the marshmallows.
