First-time towing checklist: before you leave the driveway

Ten quick checks that prevent most beginner mishaps.

Most towing problems begin before the engine starts. Walk around the rig with this list every time. It takes five minutes.

  • Hitch fully seated and locked; safety or breakaway cable attached.
  • Lights: indicators, brake lights and tail lights all working with the caravan connected.
  • Tyre pressures checked on car, caravan and the spare.
  • Heavy items low and close to the axle; nothing loose that can slide.
  • Gas off, steps up, windows and roof vents closed, fridge door latched.
  • Jockey wheel raised and clamped; handbrake released.
  • Mirrors set so you can see along both sides of the caravan.
  • Check the tow ratings in the handbooks of both vehicles; do not guess.
  • Plan your route and fuel stops; leave extra time and drive smoothly.
  • Check your insurance and any licence requirement for your combination with the relevant authority.

Practise reversing in an empty car park before your first trip. Everyone looks silly at first; nobody looks silly twice.
