Stargazing from your pitch: a beginner’s guide
Johor’s darker corners are made for looking up. Here is how to get the most from the night sky.
Leave the town lights behind and the night sky becomes a different place. A few simple habits make it even better.
- Choose a new-moon week; a bright moon washes out faint stars.
- Let your eyes adapt for about twenty minutes and use a red torch to protect your night vision.
- Free star-map apps on your phone name planets and constellations; dim the screen first.
- From Malaysia the bright core of the Milky Way is generally easiest to see from about March to October.
- Pick a site away from town and industry: Endau-Rompin and quiet east-coast beaches are good starting points.
Bring a reclining chair, a blanket and something hot to drink. Then do nothing for an hour. That is the whole secret.
